How children learn lecture

‘Children learn the best when learning is pleasant and free’ – John Holt
Babies and learning
Non nutritive sucking
Habituation
Visual Expectation
Studies have shown that:
Babies learn in there sleep
Short attention span
Learning through the senses
Smell is the most effective form of learning
And they learn 30% through hearing
Ways of learning
Kinaesthetic learning – prefer to learn through touch or movement, doodling and fidgeting, always needing to do something and keep learning and busy. Like to skip the intro and straight to the actual doing or making parts
Hearing Auditory – these learners prefer to use rhythm pace and tone and remember how things sounded. More musical and speak in more modulated tones. Eric Carl  who wrote the hungry caterpillar is a particularly good book for children as they learn the repetition of days. Learn better with background sounds or music.
Visual – See everything in pictures, you will need to see visual evidence of whats being talked about. Thee learners tend to look more at pictures charts and maps and want to colour things in to create visuals.
‘I hear I forgot, I see I remember, I do I understand’
Learn better in groups
Self motivated and self directed learning
Child can teach self basic things
There doesn’t always need to be a reward for there learning ( but can be helpful)
Building on pre existing knowledge
Taking the familiar in order to explain the unfamiliar. A common approach in reference and information titles.
Transferring knowledge
Applying the learned information to the a real life situation makes the information more meaningful and research indicates that it is better retained

Memory strategies
Repetition or rhyme
Summarising
Grouping
